Undercover video released on Wednesday by animal rights organization, Mercy for Animals, shows how chickens are treated before being turned into McDonald’s famous Chicken McNuggets.

McTyson

The graphic footage was filmed at T&S Farm in Dukedom, Tennessee by an investigator for Mercy for Animals, who applied for a job at the Tyson Foods-contracted farm earlier this year.

The covert activist, who worked at T&S in July and August, captured images of workers beating chickens with nails attached to makeshift clubs and stepping on the heads of live chickens. One employee can be heard on video asking, “You don’t work for PETA, do you?” before bludgeoning a chicken to death with a homemade spiked bat.

Both Tyson — who would use the chicken from the plant to supply McDonald’s with meat for their McNuggets — and McDonald’s have since distanced themselves from the Tennessee farm.

“Members of our animal well-being team are investigating, however, based on what we currently know, we are terminating the farmer’s contract to grow chickens for us,” said a Tyson spokesperson via email.

McDonald’s echoed those sentiments in a statement of its own:

We believe treating animals with care and respect is an integral part of a responsible supply chain and find the behavior depicted in this video to be completely unacceptable. We support Tyson Foods’ decision to terminate their contract with this farmer.

Despite the swift “action” by both corporations, this isn’t the first time the animal rights group has caught Tyson abusing animals. Just last month, Mercy for Animals released a video exposing the torture of chickens at a different Tyson Farm in Delaware.
